Chocolate Sourdough Bread: A Graduate Favorite

đŸ« Chocolate Sourdough Bread: A Graduate Favorite

If you’ve taken one of our classes at Sourdough University, chances are you’ve sampled a slice of this rich, chocolatey sourdough as part of our post-bake celebration. It’s one of our favorite ways to show off what your starter can do beyond a traditional crusty loaf—and yes, it always gets rave reviews.

We use Amy Bakes Bread’s recipe as a base, and let’s just say
 it’s a graduate-level treat.

Chocolate sourdough starter

What Makes It Special?

This isn’t just “bread with chocolate”—this is full-on artisan sourdough with a cocoa-kissed crumb, studded with melty chocolate chips and a soft, almost cake-like texture that still manages to feel wholesome. It’s rich, but not too sweet. Fancy, but still deeply comforting. And because it’s fermented, it’s packed with flavor you just can’t rush.

Monica’s Twist 🍓

We’ve experimented with a few additions over the semesters, including dehydrated strawberries folded into the dough. While the strawberry bits bring fun bursts of flavor, we’re finding that the real win is in the pairing:

  • A thin layer of strawberry jam rolled into the dough before shaping

  • Or simply spreading jam on top after baking for that chocolate-covered-strawberry vibe

It turns an already indulgent loaf into something truly celebration-worthy.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Toast it and top with ricotta + berries

  • Use it as the base for a mind-blowing French toast

  • Serve slices with a wine & cheese board

  • Or just eat it warm, with a little butter. You earned it.

Want to bake it at home? Grab the full recipe here, and let us know how yours turns out!

And remember: your starter is more than just bread—it’s an invitation to experiment, explore, and maybe sneak chocolate into breakfast. 😉
